Those of us who dismissed Jason Kay as a talented copyist and poster boy of the trendy acid jazz movement when he burst on to the scene in can only listen to Jamiroquai's fabulous sixth album and weep with embarrassment. True, he still sings like the young Stevie Wonder at times and yes, his songs are generally stronger on groove and mood than original melody. A fuzzed vocoder vocal supplies a ghostly introduction to a mid-tempo feelgood funk riff which swiftly evolves into a riot of parping synths, splintered guitar, and outrageously cooing girls.
Because I have an odd obsession with having every song Glee has ever done on my iPod and I could not find it anywhere else, here is both parts of Noah Guthrie as Roderick on Glee in the episode Homecoming singing Viva Voce by The Rocketboys! But when I actually make art… I reproduce art really fast. He seemed really interested in my findings and said it was a great project!
There was a time, oh young ones, when self-produced indie rock was supposed to be lo-fi. These were the years before CD-Rs and Pro Tools allowed every bored teenager to create his or her own symphonies. Bands like Paramore, Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, and more masterfully honed this beautifully bratty wave of pop punk. The sound came to be associated with the label that a lot of the bands were signed to: Fueled by Ramen.
One day I'll take my life Right back and live it right The wreckage of my past Like firewood Keeps piling up on me No kind philosophy Can ever quite reach me Like happiness might be The wonder wonder underneath it all. I've listened to those fools That went to those good schools But they don't know what's like To work and sleep and wake and work again Yes, she might hav torn my heart apart Like chicken on a plate And yes, I might be free But freedom never felt so wrong to me. I want to meet her on The bright side of the leaf And whisper it's okay Like a cloud might whisper To its lady rain But her eyes were never home She was never quite alone Like some psychotic dawn She only came alive when things were going wrong.
It's not a bad album, but there's nothing especially distinctive or memorable about it. But in the end, nothing about Hooray for Now separates Viva Voce from the horde of likeminded outfits operating at the time. The protracted silence that followed its release led anyone who'd noticed them in the first place to assume the Robinsons had said their piece and gone on to paying jobs elsewhere.
